There are typically three types of tests for travel;
The PCR and Antigen tests determine if you currently carry the COVID-19 virus and, as such, are the most requested for travel. Both have a sample collection process of nasal or throat swabs. The antigen could be referred to as rapid test, lateral flow test, rapid lateral flow test, rapid antigen test etc. It is a quick test that reveals your infection status within 10 minutes. The PCR test is also referred to as RT-PCR test, NAAT among others. The PCR test is the gold standard of COVID-19 tests and is the one to go with if you are ever unsure, as it is accepted in almost all countries. It typically takes 24 hours to receive results. The antibody test determines whether you carry the antibodies of the virus, which indicates you have had COVID-19 in the past. Specimen sample is collected by drawing blood. Mainland China currently requires this test (among others) for entry.

The type of test depends on the entry requirements set by the destination country. Therefore, it is advisable to be familiar with their entry requirements, including their required testing window, typically 72HRS before departure. You might also want to check with the airline you are flying with for their flight boarding requirements.

The embassy website of your destination country is always a great place to start your search. THIS tool is helpful to search for the entry requirements for most countries. Remember that the rules are constantly changing, so it is important to check the last time whatever resource you are reading from was updated.

Most countries require a test to be completed 72 hours before departure. However, we have found the sweet spot is the 48-hour mark. At 48 hours, you give yourself a buffer in case of delayed flights and allow enough time for results to be released. This is more relevant to the PCR test as the Antigen test is instant.
If you test positive, you will be advised to self-isolate and follow the procedures set by the BCCDC.
LifeLabs is responsible for analyzing the COVID-19 samples and reporting the test results to Amani Travel Health Clinic. If LifeLabs is overwhelmed with demand, your test result may be delayed.
